Reliable Heater Repair Solutions
Furnaces and other heating systems often show symptoms of malfunction well before the issue becomes serious. One of the most common signs is excessive energy consumption.
Gas models burn more fuel, while electric models use significantly more electricity. This is one reason why we recommend that you monitor your usage month to month and year to year. You can check your bill the old-fashioned way, or you can use smart thermostats that track it for you.
Watch for these other signs that you may need heating repair service:
- Unpleasant smells
- Loud or unusual noises
- Carbon monoxide alarms
- Excessive dust accumulation
- Pilot light color other than blue
Monitor fuel and power-related issues, and remember that most gas furnaces require electricity. An isolated tripped breaker might not be concerning, but if it happens repeatedly, take note.
Avoid continually resetting the breaker, as it could indicate a serious electrical problem. Most modern gas models now feature electric ignition systems. If your furnace still has a pilot light, it may extinguish occasionally. However, it is not normal for it to go out frequently or to be difficult to relight.
Watch for irregular cycling. A typical heating cycle lasts 10 to 15 minutes and should occur no more than three times an hour. If the system runs for extended periods, it often indicates problems with the thermostat or control board.
Frequent on-and-off cycles, known as short cycling, may stem from something as simple as a clogged filter. Regardless of the cause, this issue can lead to significant wear and tear.
Don’t ignore weak airflow or uneven heating. If your vents emit weak air, this may indicate a blower problem. A furnace should distribute heat evenly throughout your home. If you notice cold spots, you might face a static pressure issue requiring furnace repair service. In multistory homes, monitor the temperature difference between floors. A difference greater than one degree is excessive and requires furnace repair service.
